Family gatherings rarely need a formal sit-down meal. Most of the time people are standing, talking and eating in stages over a few hours, and the food should be built for that.
Party Platters

How Much Party Food to Order
The most common mistake is ordering one format when the event needs two. A three-hour family gathering usually wants platters and finger food early, then a hot main course later. Splitting the order that way costs about the same and empties far fewer trays back into your fridge.
As a guide, count two to three kabab or tikka pieces per guest for a grazing menu, and one main plus one rice portion per adult if you are serving a proper meal. Add a vegetarian dish for every four guests.
